Curious, my daughter looked at me and asked, “Dad, did you always write when you were a kid?” Her innocent question made me feel happy and sad as I realized I had no clear answer to her question about what I wanted to be when I grew up.

The past few years of my life have been a whirlwind, and sometimes I wonder how I ended up here, writing this essay. I’ve always dreamed of being someone who had a passion and purpose and could inspire others. But I lose interest in things too quickly to pursue anything worthwhile.

I’ve worn many hats in life — combat Marine, an air traffic controller, a personal trainer, a massage therapist, a strength coach, a bartender, a bouncer, a construction worker, an embassy security guard, a copywriter, a writer, an author, husband, and a dad — and those are just some of the jobs I can remember. I also have multiple degrees and certifications from various backgrounds, and I’ve taken countless courses and attended events to build my skills.

So, what does a skilled man like me do at thirty-nine years old?

It’s both a scary and exciting place because I’m finally shedding all the layers…
