Presence. A word often used. Hardly embodied. The battles we experience when we are everywhere but here can feel like a never-ending war with our hearts and minds.

When I think about the internal wars we face, I think back to my time alone in Death Valley on a vision fast. When preparing for severance ( the process of letting go of the old), I found a quote by Francis Weller, author, and psychotherapist:

“We live superficial lives and feel the gnawing ache of something missing. If we are to return to the richly textured life of the soul and participate with the world’s soul, we must pass through the intense region of grief and sorrow.”

What does passing through an intense region of grief and sorrow mean? Could it be that the best way to meet our true selves was to spend some time alone? Indeed it’s not that easy. Or is it?
