We were hiking Mount Adams, the second-highest peak in the whites of NH- it was only a few weeks since we met on Hinge. Maddie was in incredible hiking shape. I was not. What was I in for?
I got into hiking a few short months ago and aim to hike all 48 peaks. It was getting warmer, and I was ready for a challenge. The weather forecasted clear with no chance of chaos on top of the mountain, and Maddie asked me over a Facetime conversation if I ever hiked the Presies. “I said no.”
She laughed “outdoor enthusiast?”
The exact words in my profile as she lightly poked at my ego. Somehow, we agreed to spend 10 miles together on rugged terrain with a 3,900 foot gain two days later.
At the Appalachian parking lot, not a single soul was around. It was 4:41 am and 44 degrees on a Thursday morning. I looked around nervously as I got caught up in a story that made me feel like I was about to be stood up. But, there she was, rolling up in her Blue Suburu Outback, ready to tackle the mountain.
